Austin Pipe Organ

First Unitarian is home to an historic three-manual Austin pipe organ, which was installed in Hamilton Hall in 1937. According to Jack Bethards, Tonal Director for the Schoenstein Organ Company, "This organ is considered by many historians and experts to be one of the finest church organs in its size category anywhere in the Western States. It is the single greatest surviving work of organ architect James B. Jamison. If any organ is worthy of careful preservation, this one is."

During construction work on the East Wing in the late 1990’s, the 2,300+ organ pipes, blower and associated equipment, were removed to a temperature-controlled, vermin-free storage facility for protection. Only the console and pedal board remain in Hamilton Hall. While the Austin organ awaits some much-needed restoration and eventual reinstallation, the congregation uses an Allen digital electronic instrument graciously loaned by the estate of Alexander Post, former Organist at the San Francisco UU Society.
