Rites of Passage
Coming of Age
This teen-age rite of passage recognizes a child’s passage to more mature faith and follows a year-long course of study in the 7th or 8th grade. This program is typically held on a Sunday in May each year.
Child DedicationsUnitarian Universalists believe that every child brings new life and hope into the world. We set aside a special time, called simply the Child Dedication, for the community to bless the child and celebrate the blessing of this gift of life. The ceremony does not make the life of the child sacred; we believe that life is sacred inherently. When we dedicate a child we acknowledge the truth that each child's life is sacred and hold that truth in the light of our faith. This service is held several times during each church year.
Families wishing to participate in a child dedication ceremony should sign up by emailing the
re@uuoakland.org or calling them at 510-893-6129 x319. Children of all ages, from newborn to teen can be recognized in this service.
